Brillenhöhle

The Brillenhöhle in the Achtal valley near Weiler is the ruin of a once-horizontal limestone cave whose ceiling has largely collapsed. It ranks among Baden-Württemberg's most important Upper Palaeolithic sites: excavations uncovered stone tools, animal bones, and traces of human occupation dating back roughly 30,000 to 40,000 years. The name — literally 'spectacles cave' — refers to the distinctive double opening of the original cave entrance, still faintly visible in the exposed rock face. The site lies along a foot trail through the Achtal and rewards visitors with an unmediated look at the Swabian Jura's geological layers alongside its prehistoric significance.
