Sewall-Belmont House and Museum

The Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., commemorates more than a century of organized struggle for women's rights in the United States. The house served as headquarters of the National Woman's Party from 1929 onward, under the leadership of Alice Paul — the principal architect of the Equal Rights Amendment, which the party first introduced to Congress in 1923. President Barack Obama designated the property a national monument on April 12, 2016, through a Presidential Proclamation. Visitors today encounter suffrage banners, personal effects of key activists, and rotating exhibits tracing the movement from the 19th Amendment's passage in 1920 to ongoing campaigns for legal equality.
