San Stae

Baroque church on the Canal Grande in Venice with one of the finest 18th-century facades and paintings by Tiepolo.

San Stae — a Venetian contraction of Sant Eustachio — is a church standing directly on the Canal Grande in the Santa Croce sestiere of Venice. Its origins reach back to the 10th or 11th century, but its present Baroque facade dates from the early 18th century and is among the most magnificent on the great waterway. The interior houses paintings by Venetian masters of the 18th century, including works by Giambattista Tiepolo and Palma il Giovane. Its 34-meter campanile is visible from a distance. Today the church also functions as an exhibition space.
