Church of the Gracious Mother of God
Warsaw
Jesuit church in Venice''s Cannaregio with a famous marble interior carved to resemble draped fabric and tapestries.
Santa Maria Assunta, popularly known as I Gesuiti, is a Jesuit church in Venice''s northern Cannaregio district, near the Fondamenta Nuove. It is above all famous for its extraordinary marble interior, which imitates damask drapery and wall hangings entirely in white and green stone – a baroque trompe-l''oeil that genuinely surprises visitors. The exterior gives little away. Inside also hangs Titian''s painting of the Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, one of his few nocturnal scenes. The church is a short walk from the vaporetto stop at the Fondamenta Nuove.
