John III Sobieski Monument in Warsaw

A baroque equestrian statue at the edge of Lazienki Park on Agrykola Street in Warsaw, one of the oldest monuments in the city. It was unveiled in September 1788 by King Stanislaw August Poniatowski and depicts his predecessor John III Sobieski in his victory over the Turks at the Battle of Vienna in 1683. Sobieski rides over a defeated Ottoman warrior, combining a propaganda message with strong dramatic motion. The sculptor Franciszek Pinck worked from a design by Andre Le Brun. The statue stands on a stone bridge over the former fortress moat and is listed in the Polish register of cultural objects. Today it is a popular pause for walkers passing from the Lazienki Park toward the city center.
