Deutsches Stadion

The German Stadium was an unrealised mega-project by Albert Speer on the Nazi Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg. With seating for 405,000 spectators it would have been the largest stadium in the world and was supposedly intended to host the Olympic Games on a permanent basis from 1945 onwards. The foundation stone was laid in 1937, but the project never progressed beyond a vast excavation pit before the war shut it down. The site is now occupied by the Silbersee, a groundwater-flooded former quarry. Walkers and cyclists pass by, the lake itself is off limits.
