Ellinger Tor

The Ellinger Tor is the most prominent surviving medieval city gate of the former imperial free city of Weißenburg in Bayern, listed as a protected architectural monument under Bavarian heritage law. Of the several gates that once punctuated the town's medieval fortification ring, only the Ellinger Tor and the Spitaltor — now repurposed as a church tower — remain standing. The gate takes its name from the road it once opened onto toward the nearby town of Ellingen, following the common medieval convention of naming town gates after the next destination along the road. It remains the defining landmark of Weißenburg's historic townscape.
