Droop Mountain

Droop Mountain rises in the Allegheny Mountains of southeastern West Virginia, straddling the Greenbrier and Pocahontas county line. It is best known as the site of the Battle of Droop Mountain, one of the most significant Civil War engagements fought in what was then the newly formed state of West Virginia. On November 6, 1863, Union forces under General William Averell decisively defeated Confederate troops under General John Echols here, consolidating Union control over the region. The Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park preserves the site today, with hiking trails through forested highland terrain and open ridgeline views across the Alleghenies.
