The Estonian Jewish Museum in Tallinn documents the history of the Jewish community in Estonia – a history that only properly began in the 19th century, as Estonia was not part of the traditional Jewish settlement area of Europe. Unlike Poland or Lithuania, Jewish presence was absent for centuries; only under Russian rule did Jews begin settling and founding communities here. The museum illuminates this gradual development, as well as the near-total destruction of the community during the Holocaust. Today it serves as both a cultural heritage site and a place of remembrance – a quiet, moving testament in the heart of the old town.
