Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße

The Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße U-Bahn station sits on the U2 line in Berlin-Mitte, opened in 1908 as part of the city's early underground network, with its island-platform hall now listed as a protected monument. The station takes its name from Anton Wilhelm Amo, born around 1703 in present-day Ghana, who became one of the first Africans to earn academic recognition in Europe, lecturing in philosophy at the universities of Halle and Wittenberg during the Enlightenment. Amo wrote on the legal rights of Africans in Europe and on the philosophy of mind — at a time when the transatlantic slave trade was at its peak. The station was renamed in 2023 as part of a Berlin initiative to embed Afro-European history into the city's everyday public spaces. It offers full wheelchair access and Wi-Fi.
