Çelebi Sultan Mehmed Mosque

The Celebi Sultan Mehmed Mosque, also called the Bayezid Mosque, in the northern Greek town of Didymoticho is one of the oldest surviving Ottoman mosques in Europe. Built in the early 15th century under Mehmed I, it stands out for its unusual wooden pyramidal roof, a rare building type later overlaid by the classical Ottoman domed style. It thus sits at the beginning of an architectural lineage that would later shape the skyline of Istanbul. After long decay the mosque has been carefully restored. The visit rewards travellers with an interest in early Ottoman architecture and the mixed heritage of the Thrace region.
