Selimiye Mosque

The Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, completed in 1575 for Sultan Selim II, is widely regarded as the crowning achievement of the Ottoman master architect Mimar Sinan — who himself declared it the greatest work of his long career, surpassing even his celebrated Süleymaniye in Istanbul. Its central dome measures 31.5 metres in diameter, fractionally exceeding that of the Hagia Sophia, a deliberate architectural statement by Sinan after decades of refining the perfect single-space interior. Four slender minarets, each with three balconies, frame the structure and define Edirne's skyline. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, the mosque interior is a feat of structural ingenuity: eight pillars carry the dome while keeping the entire prayer hall free of obstructing columns, flooding the ashlar-stone space with light through coloured glass windows and intricate Ottoman calligraphy.
