Elisabethbrunnen

The Elisabethbrunnen in Marburg's old town takes its name from Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia, who lived and worked in the city from 1207 until her death in 1231 and became renowned for her charity toward the poor and sick. Wells bearing her name were common devotional fixtures in medieval German towns, linking everyday civic infrastructure to the cult of the saint whose remains rest in the nearby Elisabethkirche. Today the fountain stands as a listed historic monument — modest in scale but embedded in one of Hesse's most enduring medieval saint traditions.
