Alter Botanischer Garten

The Old Botanical Garden of Philipps University Marburg occupies 3.6 hectares just below the Pilgrimstein street, a short walk south of the Elisabethkirche in the city center. Its origins predate its official 1812 founding: the site was first laid out as a formal French pleasure garden by the Teutonic Order's chapter house as early as 1786. Listed as a cultural monument, the garden blends university plant collections with freely accessible green space — it remains open around the clock. The combination of historic garden geometry and teaching collections makes it a quiet counterpoint to Marburg's busy medieval Altstadt.
