Ferdinand Verbiest was a Flemish Jesuit from Pittem who served at the Chinese imperial court from 1659 as missionary and astronomer. Under the Kangxi emperor he ran the Astronomical Bureau, built new instruments for the Beijing Observatory, and is credited with designing one of the earliest steam-powered vehicles. Visitors encounter him today mainly at the Beijing Ancient Observatory and in exhibitions on the Jesuit China mission.
