Flaminio Stadium

Stadio Flaminio sits on Via Flaminia about three kilometres north of central Rome and is a key work of Italian post-war modernism. Pier Luigi Nervi and his son Antonio designed the reinforced-concrete arena for the 1960 Olympic Games, with signature ramps and an elegantly cantilevered main-stand roof. It later hosted Italy's Six Nations rugby matches in front of 24,973 spectators for many seasons. Closed since 2011, the stadium has been slowly consumed by vegetation and is now a high-profile case of Rome's struggle with its modern architectural heritage. Visitors can view the abandoned giant from outside and combine it with a stroll through the Foro Italico district.
