MUFG Stadium
Also known as: Tokyo Olympic Stadium, National Stadium, Kokuritsu · +3
Tokyo's National Stadium - branded MUFG Stadium since 2024 - is the main 2019 venue of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, built on the site of the 1958 original in the Kasumigaoka district of Shinjuku. The design came from Japanese architect Kengo Kuma after a controversial Zaha Hadid concept was scrapped; instead of her futuristic arch Kuma chose stepped wooden galleries of cedar and larch sourced from all 47 Japanese prefectures, keeping the building deliberately low and permeable. 68,000 seats, a 400-meter track, and removable tiers for football or rugby reconfigurations. Today it hosts J-League finals, rugby tests, and major concerts; guided stadium tours run when there are no events.
