Enigmatic bronze near the Spanish Synagogue — Kafka borne on the shoulders of a headless giant

Tucked in a narrow lane in Josefov — Prague''s former Jewish ghetto — this striking bronze sculpture has stood since 2003 as one of Europe''s most unusual literary monuments. Czech artist Jaroslav Rona based it on a scene from Kafka''s early story "Description of a Struggle": a giant headless figure in a suit, unsettling and hovering, carries a small seated man on its shoulders — that small man is Kafka himself. The image speaks to Kafka''s famously conflicted relationship with Prague, the city of his birth: he felt both imprisoned and carried by it, unable to leave, unable to fully belong. The monument stands near the Spanish Synagogue, deep in the quarter that Kafka walked daily and that haunted his fiction. Amid the busy tourist traffic of Josefov, it invites a quiet, contemplative pause.
