Friedrich Wilhelm II.

This memorial to Friedrich Wilhelm II stands on Schulplatz in central Neuruppin, directly opposite the old gymnasium building. It commemorates the Prussian king's decisive role in financing the city's reconstruction after the catastrophic Great Fire of 1787, which levelled much of the town. The original monument was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and sculpted by Christian Friedrich Tieck, inaugurated on 26 August 1829. The current figure is a replica of that original. As one of the few Schinkel-designed memorials outside Berlin, it offers a quiet example of early 19th-century Neoclassical civic commemoration in a small Brandenburg town.
