Basilica di San Marino

Perched at the summit of Monte Titano, the Basilica di San Marino serves as the co-cathedral of the Diocese of San Marino-Montefeltro and the spiritual heart of the world's oldest republic. The current structure was rebuilt in 1855 in a restrained neoclassical style, its columned portico and tall colonnaded nave characteristic of 19th-century ecclesiastical classicism. It is dedicated to Saint Marinus, a Dalmatian stonemason who, according to legend, founded a Christian community on Monte Titano in the 4th century — the seed from which the republic grew. The basilica became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, when the entire historic center was inscribed, and its facade has been depicted on San Marino's national 10-cent euro coin ever since. The church is open to visitors year-round and remains an active place of worship.
