Memorial of Friedrich Wilhelm von Bülow

The Buelow Monument on Unter den Linden portrays the Prussian general Friedrich Wilhelm Buelow von Dennewitz (1755-1816), victor of the Battle of Dennewitz, in idealized Roman toga. Christian Daniel Rauch, the leading Prussian sculptor of the 19th century, created it from 1819 to 1822 as a counterpart to the neighboring Scharnhorst Monument. Both statues stood in front of the Neue Wache until 1951, then were moved when East Germany redesigned the square, and only returned to their original location in 2002 after long debate. The Buelow Monument is considered one of the masterworks of the Berlin sculpture school and is on the city's heritage list.
