Haymarket Martyrs' Monument

Chicago

Memorial at Forest Home Cemetery (1893) for the victims of the 1886 Haymarket affair – a key pilgrimage site of the American labor movement.

The Haymarket Martyrs' Monument at Forest Home Cemetery in Forest Park, Illinois, is one of the most important memorial sites of the American labor movement. Dedicated in 1893, it honors those convicted in connection with the Haymarket affair of 1886 – a still-unresolved bombing at a labor rally in Chicago that became a defining moment in the struggle for the eight-hour workday. The bronze sculpture by Albert Weinert depicts a dying worker shielded by an allegorical female figure. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1997, the monument draws union members and activists from around the world, especially on May Day.
