300 North LaSalle is a 239-meter glass office tower directly on the north bank of the Chicago River, built between 2006 and 2009. The firm Pickard Chilton designed it as the headquarters of the law firm Kirkland & Ellis. Its ground floor opens to the river in a public Riverwalk plaza with fountains and stepped seating, used as an open-air cafe in summer. The building earned LEED Gold certification thanks to its river-water cooling system. Anyone walking the Riverwalk can enter the plaza without charge and find one of the best lesser-known seats along the river. After dark the glass tower mirrors the lights of Marina City across the water.
