Herzogsturm

The Herzogsturm — also known as the Römerturm — is a massive Romanesque residential tower on the Alter Kornmarkt in Regensburg's old town, and one of the oldest surviving elements of the medieval ducal palace complex. It was once linked to the adjacent Herzogshof by a passable arch; that arch was demolished in 1855 and rebuilt in simplified form in 1937–40. Its sturdy ashlar masonry, rooted in Roman and early medieval construction, makes it an unusually intact example of secular Romanesque architecture in Bavaria. Though not open to the public, the tower is clearly visible from street level and forms a distinctive anchor in Regensburg's UNESCO World Heritage old town.
