Charles Square Prague

One of Europe's largest city squares, founded by Charles IV in 1348 as the main square of Prague's New Town.

Charles Square (Karlovo náměstí) in Prague's New Town was founded in 1348 by Emperor Charles IV and, at around 80,000 square metres, was one of the largest market squares in medieval Europe. It served as the main cattle market and trading hub of the New Town. Since the 19th century its central area has been a landscaped park with fountains and statues. Today it blends historic city architecture with everyday urban life at the heart of Prague.
