St. Elisabeth Convent

Minsk

Minsk's only Orthodox convent (founded 1999), named after the sainted martyr Grand Duchess Elisabeth.

St. Elisabeth Convent on the outskirts of Minsk is the only functioning Orthodox convent in the Belarusian capital, founded in 1999. It is named after Grand Duchess Yelizaveta Fyodorovna, a German princess who devoted herself to religious service after her husband's assassination in 1905 and was executed by the Bolsheviks in 1918 – now venerated as a saint and martyr by the Orthodox Church. The convent houses workshops for religious art and bookbinding and is a place of living spirituality off the beaten tourist path.
