Pischalauski Castle

Pischalauski Castle is a brick complex built in 1825 by architect Kasimir Khreshchanovich for commissioner Rudolf Pishchala, combining classicist proportions with neogothic decorative elements in the center of Minsk. Despite its castle-like facade, the structure was designed from the outset as a prison, and it has held political prisoners continuously from the tsarist era through Soviet rule to the present Belarusian state. It remains one of the few active execution sites in Europe — a fact that gives this listed national cultural monument a weight far beyond its architectural interest. Visitors see only the exterior; the interior function has never ceased.
