Mitre Square

Mitre Square is a small square of about 500 square metres on the southern edge of the City of London, just off Aldgate. It is best known as the site of the fourth canonical Jack the Ripper murder: in the early hours of 30 September 1888, the body of Catherine Eddowes was found here, less than an hour after the killing of Elizabeth Stride in neighbouring Whitechapel. Now surrounded by modern offices, the square is a fixed stop on almost every Ripper walking tour starting at Aldgate. By day it serves City workers on lunch breaks; by night it is silent and oddly oppressive.
