Mummelsee

The Mummelsee is a glacially formed cirque lake sitting at 1,028 metres on the northern slope of the Hornisgrinde, the highest peak of the northern Black Forest. At just 3.7 hectares and 18 metres deep, its draw lies less in scale than in atmosphere — on misty mornings the dark, still water has an almost eerie quality. Local legend holds that water nymphs (Nixen) inhabit the depths and lure wanderers under, a tale woven into the region's folklore for centuries. The lake sits directly on the Schwarzwaldhochstraße (B500), making it one of the most visited natural spots in Baden-Württemberg. A short lakeside path circles the water in minutes, a mountain inn serves regional food nearby, and a small boat tour offers a different perspective on the surrounding forest slopes.
