The Musee des tramways a vapeur et des chemins de fer secondaires francais sits beside Valmondois station in Butry-sur-Oise, about 30 kilometres north of Paris. It preserves a rare collection of French steam tramways, light railways and narrow-gauge branch lines that once connected villages and suburbs before fading away from the 1930s onward. Volunteers have been restoring the locomotives since the 1970s; on operating days they top up the water, shovel coal and run trains along a short demonstration track. For families with rail-minded children it makes an easy day trip into the Val-d'Oise, paired well with a picnic and a walk along the Oise.
