National Gallery of Art

The National Gallery of Art on the National Mall is the United States' national art museum, with a collection spanning the Renaissance to contemporary art. John Russell Pope's neoclassical West Building (1941) and I. M. Pei's modernist East Building (1978) are linked by an underground concourse. The museum was founded in 1937 with the gift of industrialist Andrew W. Mellon, who donated his paintings along with funds for the building. Today visitors can see Leonardo's Ginevra de' Benci, the only Leonardo in the Americas, Vermeer's Woman Holding a Balance, works by Rembrandt, Monet and Cezanne, and Calder mobiles in the East Building. Admission is free. The Sculpture Garden west of the West Building features Lichtenstein, Miro and Bourgeois, with an ice rink in winter and fountain in summer.
