Ueno Royal Museum

The Ueno Royal Museum sits within Ueno Park in Tokyo's Taitō ward and opened in 1972 under the ownership of the Fujisankei Communications Group, making it one of the few privately run venues in an otherwise government-dominated museum cluster. The museum specializes in contemporary art, anchored by two recurring exhibitions: the Ueno Royal Museum Grand Prize Exhibition and the Japanese Nature Painting Exhibition, which showcases landscape and wildlife works in traditional Japanese styles. Special international loan exhibitions rotate through the year. Its compact scale and changing program make it a complement rather than a destination on its own — best visited alongside the nearby Tokyo National Museum.
