New Chambers

The New Chambers stand just west of Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam's park, mirroring the Picture Gallery on the eastern side. Frederick the Great commissioned the building from 1747 to designs by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff as an orangery and banquet hall. Between 1771 and 1775 Georg Christian Unger converted it into a guesthouse with four lavish ceremonial rooms and seven guest suites. Highlights include the Ovid Gallery with gilded reliefs of scenes from the Metamorphoses and the Jasper Hall, clad in minerals from Silesian quarries. The New Chambers form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin and open seasonally for visits.
