Orthodox Cemetery in Warsaw

The Orthodox Cemetery in Warsaw lies on Wolska Street in the Wola district and at around 13 to 18 hectares is the only and largest Orthodox burial ground in Poland. It was opened in 1834 under Russian rule, when Warsaw was home to a sizable Russian Orthodox diaspora of officials, soldiers and their families. Two wooden chapels stand among mature trees alongside numerous grave chapels in neo-Byzantine and Art Nouveau styles. Among those buried here are the writer Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz, members of Belarusian and Ukrainian communities, and many Tsarist dignitaries. Today the cemetery is a quiet refuge among the apartment blocks of Wola that few tourists find; on All Saints' Day it glows with candles.
