Dresden Panometer

The Dresden Panometer is a repurposed late-19th-century gasometer in the Reick district, its cylindrical brick shell now housing monumental 360° panorama paintings by artist Yadegar Asisi. Originally built to supply the city with coal gas and still operational through the GDR era, the structure was listed as an industrial monument after reunification and converted into a cultural venue in 2006. Asisi's panoramas — depicting subjects ranging from baroque Dresden and the Amazon rainforest to outer space — stand up to 30 metres tall and 105 metres in circumference, viewed from a central raised platform. The combination of vast scale, choreographed lighting, and ambient sound dissolves the boundary between image and physical space into a sustained illusion.
