Sanxingdui

Sanxingdui is one of East Asia's most important archaeological sites, located about 40 kilometres north of Chengdu in Sichuan province. It represents an ancient Bronze Age civilisation associated with the early Shu culture, dated from roughly 2800 to 800 BCE — contemporaneous with the Shang dynasty yet strikingly unlike it in every artistic and cultural respect. The site rose to global fame in 1986 when archaeologists uncovered two ritual pits filled with large bronze masks featuring dramatically protruding eyes, oversized standing figures, and gold foil objects whose origin and meaning remain the subject of active scholarly debate. Since 2021, excavation of six additional sacrificial pits has continued under controlled laboratory conditions, with visitors able to watch archaeologists work in real time through glass walls at the adjacent Sanxingdui Museum. The combination of ongoing discovery and deeply unresolved historical questions makes this one of the few sites where archaeological mystery is still unfolding in public view.
