Schloss Drachenburg

Schloss Drachenburg clings to the slopes of the Drachenfels hill above the Rhine near Königswinter, one of the most striking examples of Wilhelmine historicist architecture in the Rhineland. Commissioned in 1882 by Bonn stockbroker Stephan von Sarter and completed in just two years, it blends neo-Gothic towers with Neo-Renaissance interiors — yet its patron never actually lived there. The 20th century was turbulent: the castle served as a Hitler Youth boarding school and suffered significant damage before a lengthy restoration returned it to its original splendor, reopening as a museum in 2010. Visitors today move through lavishly restored state rooms with period wall paintings and stained glass. The hillside walk up from the Rhine provides panoramic views over the river valley and the Siebengebirge range.
