Drachenfels castle

The Drachenfels castle ruin crowns a 321-metre summit in the Siebengebirge hills south of Bonn and is one of the Rhine Valley's most recognizable silhouettes. Founded in 1138 by Cologne Archbishop Arnold I. and completed in 1149 by Gerhard von Are, provost of the Bonn St. Cassius collegiate church, it served as an episcopal stronghold commanding the Rhine. The site's romantic associations run deep: Lord Byron immortalized it in his 1816 poem "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage," and it became a defining motif for generations of Romantic-era painters. A hiking trail winds through mixed forest to the summit, where the ruins open onto broad views across the Rhine, the Cologne lowlands, and the wooded peaks of the Siebengebirge.
