Ordensburg Vogelsang

Ordensburg Vogelsang is one of the largest surviving Nazi-era monumental complexes in Germany, second only to the Nuremberg rally grounds in total built area. Construction began in 1934 on the Erpenscheid plateau above the Urft reservoir in the Eifel highlands; between 1936 and 1939 the site served the NSDAP as an elite leadership school, training future party cadres through a regime of ideological indoctrination and physical hardening. After World War II, Belgian NATO forces used the compound as a military training base for decades, keeping it sealed from the public until 2006. Today it houses Museum Vogelsang IP, a permanent exhibition that documents the site's perpetrator history unflinchingly alongside a parallel exhibition on the surrounding Eifel National Park. The massive sandstone structures — some crumbling, some stabilized — spread across nearly 100 hectares of forested hillside, creating an atmosphere of unease that sets this site apart from any other surviving piece of Nazi architecture.
