Silahtar Ahmet Ağa Sıbyan Mektebi

The Silahtar Ahmet Ağa Sıbyan Mektebi is an Ottoman children's Quran school — a sıbyan mektebi — most likely built in the 17th or 18th century as part of a pious charitable endowment (vakıf). Such schools, typically a compact domed structure in stone or brick, served as the first rung of education in the Ottoman Empire and were almost always tied to a nearby mosque or külliye complex. Today the building stands locked and neglected, its courtyard overgrown, a fate shared by many of Istanbul's small Ottoman educational structures that never received restoration funds.
