Barnbougle Castle

Barnbougle Castle is a medieval tower house on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth, substantially rebuilt in 1881 in a Romantic neo-Gothic style for Archibald Primrose, the 5th Earl of Rosebery. Primrose went on to serve as British Prime Minister from 1894 to 1895, and the isolated tower was his favoured retreat for reading and private study — a habit his contemporaries considered decidedly eccentric. The castle sits on the Dalmeny estate between Cramond and Queensferry, listed as a Category A protected building in Scotland. The Firth of Forth coastal path passes directly in front of the tower, offering unobstructed views west toward the Forth bridges and making it one of the quieter, more atmospheric detours on Edinburgh's coastal fringe.
