Kilitbahir Castle

Kilitbahir Castle sits on the European shore of the Dardanelles at its narrowest crossing, directly opposite Çanakkale. Sultan Mehmed II ordered its construction in 1463, just a decade after his conquest of Constantinople, pairing it with the fortress of Kale-i Sultaniye on the Asian bank to form a strategic chokepoint — the name Kilitbahir translates literally as 'lock of the sea'. Together the twin fortresses could halt any vessel attempting to pass through the strait, and both were later reinforced during the prolonged Ottoman siege of Venetian Crete. The castle's unusual triangular keep ringed by cylindrical towers remains largely intact and commands sweeping views across the roughly 1.2-kilometre-wide strait, best appreciated from the short ferry crossing from Çanakkale.
