Vodina Caddesi is the main artery of Balat, Istanbul's former Greek quarter on the European shore of the Golden Horn, where colourful Ottoman tenements climb a steep cobblestone hillside. The surrounding Fener-Balat district is one of Istanbul's designated cultural heritage zones, preserving traces of Byzantine and Ottoman-era Greek community life. A decade ago most of the street's shopfronts sat shuttered; an influx of artists, expats, and local entrepreneurs transformed it into one of the city's most talked-about neighbourhoods. Today the street is lined with independent cafés, terrace restaurants with panoramic views over the Golden Horn, and small boutiques tucked into ground-floor spaces of crumbling but photogenic apartment blocks. The pronounced uphill terrain gives the street an unusually physical character — visitors routinely describe it as a workout as much as a stroll.
