Cankurtaran

Cankurtaran is a quiet residential neighborhood tucked between the Topkapı Palace grounds and the Sea of Marmara coast, at the eastern fringe of the Sultanahmet old city. It is one of Istanbul's most ancient inhabited zones, where Byzantine and Ottoman building layers overlap in narrow lanes lined with weathered tenement houses. Despite sitting within walking distance of Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, the neighborhood feels markedly more local than its neighbors — small cafés serve residents rather than tour groups, and street life moves at an unhurried pace. The coastal promenade along the old sea walls offers unobstructed views across the Marmara toward the Princes' Islands, making it a favored sunset spot for Istanbulites.
