Nordend

Nordend is Frankfurt's most intact Gründerzeit neighborhood, built out rapidly between the 1870s and early 1900s as the city expanded following German unification. Five- and six-story rental blocks with stucco facades and scattered Jugendstil ornament define nearly every street, with ground floors now occupied by cafés, independent bookshops, and organic grocers. Unlike the more affluent Westend to the south, Nordend retained a leftward, alternative residential culture rooted in the squatter movements of the 1980s. Side streets between Berger Strasse and Eckenheimer Landstrasse reward slow exploration: well-preserved inner courtyards, leafy neighborhood squares, and bars that cater to regulars rather than crowds.
