Zindan Gate

The Zindan Gate is a semicircular fortification within the Belgrade Fortress complex, erected in the mid-15th century as an outwork protecting the older Gate of the Despot. Its name derives from the Turkish word for dungeon — under Ottoman rule, the gate's auxiliary chambers and towers were repurposed as a prison for captives and condemned prisoners. The two rounded towers are connected by a bridge but remain structurally independent of one another, suggesting distinct construction phases. Today the gate stands as one of the most tangible medieval remnants within the Kalemegdan complex, offering a legible example of how Ottoman occupiers adapted existing Serbian defensive architecture to new functions.
