Aeschentor

Former city gate of Basel's medieval fortifications – part of the outer ring wall begun in 1362, demolished in the 19th century.

The Aeschentor was one of the city gates in Basel's medieval fortifications. It formed part of the outer ring wall, construction of which began in 1362 and was completed in 1398. Like most of Basel's city gates, it was demolished in the 19th century as the city expanded and the old walls were seen as an obstacle. Three outer gates were preserved as historical monuments; the Aeschentor was not among them. Today the name survives mainly in the street name in southern Basel, where the gate once marked the main access towards Alsace.
