Former Residence of Chiang Kai-shek

Chiang Kai-shek's former residence in Chongqing stands on the slope of Mount Huangshan south of the Yangtze and served from 1938 to 1946 as the home and working seat of the Kuomintang leader during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The hillside compound includes the two-storey Yunxiu Lou main house, the Songting summer pavilion built for Soong Mei-ling and several reinforced bunkers, from which Chiang directed Republic of China war strategy. He received George Marshall here during the failed 1946 postwar negotiations. The site is now a protected museum: original furnishings, telegram books and Burma Road maps offer an unusually sober view, by mainland standards, of the years when Chongqing was the capital of an undivided China.
