The T-55 is one of the most-produced tanks in history — over 100,000 built between 1958 and the 1980s. A development of the T-54, it added improved protection against nuclear blast and radiation while retaining the same 100mm gun. Standard equipment of Warsaw Pact armies including the East German NVA, the T-55 saw combat in dozens of conflicts worldwide. The St. Petersburg exhibit represents the sheer scale of Soviet post-war tank production.
