Abbatiale Saint-Jouin de Marnes

The former abbey church of Saint-Jouin-de-Marnes in the Deux-Sèvres département is one of the most important Romanesque religious buildings in the Poitou region. Founded in 1095 as a Benedictine abbey, it underwent a significant transformation in the 13th century when most of its vaults were rebuilt in the Angevin Gothic style — making it a rare architectural hybrid, with a Romanesque shell enclosing a Gothic interior. It was listed among France's very first Monuments Historiques in 1862, recognising its national significance early. Today the church receives visitors in near-total quiet: the village is tiny, crowds are sparse, and the soaring vaulted interior can be experienced with an uncommon sense of solitude.
